Nível Médio do Mar

O nível que a superfície livre do mar, supostamente teria na ausência da maré e dos efeitos meteorológicos. Varia de lugar para lugar e também ao longo do tempo, em função da geometria do leito do mar, da circulação geral dos oceanos, da temperatura, do efeito do degelo das calotes polares, e dos movimentos verticais das placas litosféricas. Constitui um nível de referência, ou datum altimétrico, das altitudes assinaladas nas cartas (nível médio adotado (NMA).

Mean Sea Level

Definição (inglês)

The level of the free surface of the sea, supposedly in the absence of the tide and weather effects. It varies from place to place and also over time, depending on the geometry of the seabed, the overall ocean circulation, the temperature, the effect of melting of the polar ice caps, and vertical movements of the lithospheric plates. It is the reference level, or the altimetric datum, of altitudes indicated on the charts.
