O programa SEPLAT - “Cartografia Sedimentar da Plataforma Continental Portuguesa” foi iniciado em 1974 no Instituto Hidrográfico com financiamento integral da Marinha. O objetivo do programa é o conhecimento e cartografia sistemática dos depósitos sedimentares da extensão oceânica do território nacional (entre a linha de costa e a vertente continental superior). Baseada na amostragem regular e análise posterior de amostras do fundo marinho e destina-se a substituir as antigas "Cartas Litológicas Submarinas", publicadas entre 1913 e 1941.

The SEPLAT program - "Sedimentary Mapping of the Portuguese Continental Shelf" was initiated in 1974 in the Hydrographic Institute with full funding of the Navy. The objective of the program is knowledge and systematic mapping of sedimentary deposits of the oceanic extension of the national territory (between the shoreline and the upper continental slope). It is based on regular sampling and subsequent analysis of seabed samples and intended to replace the old "Submarine Lithological Maps", published between 1913 and 1941.
